When you want your building cleaning get in touch

5 Reasons why it's IMPORTANT to have your Gutters Cleared

Storm Callum that hit the UK this month has definitely stripped trees of their leaves & Autumn is well & truly here.  Falling leaves are one of the main culprits causing blocked gutters & here are 5 GOOD reasons why it's important to have your gutters cleared out to keep them free flowing

1) Leaking & overflowing gutters are often a sign of more problems.  Often it is blockages such as small shrubs or thriving "gutter gardens" that are the cause.  The good news is these can easily be removed.

2) Water from overflowing or leaking gutters often finds a way to penetrate the building facade on it's way to the ground.  This can result in unsightly algae build up & soiling or worse damage to the facade.  This is particularly noticable if cold weather casuses the penetrating water to expand & can push render away from the building causing cracks & costly repairs.

3) Damp inside as well as out.  Water penetrating the buildign due to blocked gutters can result in damp within the building.  Not only unpleasant to look at it can cause health issues for your staff & customers.  Who would want to stay in a hotel room with visable damp, office with damp corners or buy from a shop with unsightly black damp staining on the walls?

4) Roof Leaks.  This is particularly problematic for large buildings & warehouses where there maybe gutter trenches between sections of roof.  If these do not drain then additional weight of the wet leaves & moss etc. can cause structural damage to the building.  Leaky roofs & the resultant water damage can affect stock, machinery, office equipment as well as furniture.  This may not be covered by your insurer if they believe the building has not be adequately cared for.

5) Overflowing water can result in slip hazards on pathways.  This can either be ice in cold weather or algae build up in warmer winters, spring & summer.

In summary, Prevention is better than cure.... proactive building maintenance by facilities managers & building owners includes gutter clearing & cleaning.  We would recommend that this is done at least annually.
